Intermediate Watercolor

Instructor:  Charles Murphy   Tuesdays 9am - 12pm

Age: Adult   Cost: $380 member, $390 non-member   Class Size: 4-15

A class for painters who have worked in watercolor as a beginner but now seek to expand their painting vocabulary and enhance their skills. Focus will be placed on composition, color schemes, special techniques and refinement of personal style. Drawing skills will be considered foundational. Previous intermediates are welcomed and will be challenged. Materials list sent upon registration.

 

Basic Design

Instructor: Melodee Rupert   Wednesday 12 - 2pm

Age: Adult   Cost: $180 member, $190 non-member   Class Size: 4-12

This class will help you understand the process of creating a finished piece of art from imagination. Sketching instruction, as well as color theory and composition, will be discussed as it applies to the overall design. A supply list will be provided upon registration for the class. Please bring a pencil, eraser, and drawing pad to the first class.

 

Drawing I

Level I   Instructor: Chick Powers   Wednesdays 10am - 12pm

Age: Adult   Cost: $180 member, $190 non-member   Class Size: 4-15

For beginners, or for those needing a refresher, this class will include graphite pencil and pen and ink techniques while stressing elements of composition and value. Materials: Graphite pencil set, kneaded eraser, 14” x 16” drawing pad.

 

Independent Drawing

Level III   Instructor: Chick Powers   Wednesdays 10am - 12pm or

1 - 3pm

Age: Adult   Cost: $180 member, $190 non-member   Class Size: 4-15

Designed for anyone with previous drawing experience. Students will choose media and subject matter. Instructor will teach techniques to improve skills and composition. Material’s are student’s choice

 

Perspective Made Easy

Instructor: Chick Powers   Wednesdays 1 - 3pm

Age: Adult   Cost: $180 member, $190 non-member   Class Size: 4-15

Add dimension and structure to your compositions. Class will cover one and two-point perspective and stress shading techniques for structures and foliage. Materials: Graphite pencil set, kneaded eraser, 14” x 16” drawing pad.

 

No Fear Factor Life Drawing   

(Please note: Class will begin Thursday, April 17, four-week class)

Instructor: Mary Guntzviller   Thursdays 10am - 1pm

Age: Adult   Cost: $215 member, $225 non-member   Class Size: 5-12

In a non- threatening environment, students explore this classic form of drawing, using the human form as subject. Individual instruction and attention are given throughout the class. Each class begins with a short discussion/lecture on application methods for supplies, a demonstration and Q and A by the instructor. Then, for 10 minutes, the students warm up/familiarize themselves with the models proportions by doing short, loose erasable sketches as the model changes poses every 30 seconds. Moving on to increasingly longer poses, from 10 minutes to 40 minutes, gives the student time to practice one or more of the following emphases for the day: Skeletal and muscle structure, standards proportion for man or woman, hands and feet, foreshortening, value, measuring techniques, techniques for correcting angles, negative space and facial features. Materials list sent upon registration.

 

Contemporary Oil Painting

Instructor: Charles Murphy   Thursdays  2 - 5 pm

Age: Adult   Cost: $415 members, $425 non-members   Class Size: 6-12

A class designed for those who wish to work innovatively in the oil medium. Classical techniques and substrate preparation will be coupled with new means and materials. Experimentation will be encouraged as well as larger formats. An introduction to the layered substrate will be part of this class. Materials list sent upon registration. Many materials will be provided by the instructor.

Digital Photography 101

Instructor: Jim Blue   Wednesdays:  April 16, April 23, April 30 and May 7   6:30-8:30 pm

Age: Adults   Cost: $75 members, $85 non-members

This course is designed for beginning individuals with SLR (changeable lenses) and higher-end point and shoot cameras with exposure controls. Course will cover ISO, shutter speeds and F-stops, proper metering, flash photography. Lenses, filters used in the digital world, close-up photography, white balance, composition, camera care and cleaning, file types, basic computer workflow with Windows XP and a brief introduction to Photoshop. Students will become familiar with all aspects of the digital camera, including camera controls and settings. Basic principles of photography and proper use of photographic accessories will help students learn how to create more than just another snapshot, and techniques to better photograph their artwork. Students should bring camera to class, along with materials for note taking.

Jim Blue owned and operated Blue Photo, a retail camera store and photo finishing lab in Traverse City for over 32 years. He has taught photo classes for over 20 years in both film and digital media, and is an avid nature photographer.

 

Watercolor...From the Beginning!

Age: Adults   Cost: $25 members, $30 non-members plus $5 materials fee   Class Size: 5-10

You too can paint pictures, all it takes is the desire, a few hours and an artist to show you how!  All you need to bring is an open mind, $5 and perhaps a friend to share the fun. I will supply everything you need to create a painting, complete with mat, ready to frame.  This is for those who have always wanted to try painting but were unsure of how and where to do so.

 

Watercolor Portraits   (Class will begin Tuesday, April 15)

Instructor: Mike Hyrman   Tuesdays 4:30 - 7:30pm

Age: 16 - Adult   Cost: $225 member, $235 non-member   Discount offered for students ages 16-24: $150 member, $160 non-member   Class Size: 4-15

Mike says, “Don’t be intimidated about painting portraits.” He will show you simple things to watch for that help bring out the likeness of your subject, bring emotion to the painting, vibrancy to the flesh and depth of the image. Work from a photo of Mike’s or from a reference of your own. Portraits make great gifts and sell well. A fun class where you’ll learn a lot. Materials list sent upon registration.

 

Watercolor, “A Closer Look At Northern Michigan”

We live in such a beautiful area with so much subject matter all around.  This class focuses on capturing the grandeur of Northern Michigan. Bring your own reference photos or work with Mike’s. A fun class where you’ll learn a lot. Materials list sent upon registration.

 

Mosiacs 101

Level I   Instructor: Adam Begley   Thursdays 6:30 - 8:30pm

Ages: 16 - Adult   Cost: $150 member, $160 non-member   Class Size: 4-10

Learn the traditional Italian method of mosaic tile art. Students will design an image (or cartoon, as the purists call it) on a flat board, then use varied textures and colors of ceramic tile to create a mosaic “painting”. Cost includes tile provided by instructor. Materials: a pair of tile snips, a pair of regular tweezers and a pair of goggles or safety glasses.

 

Drop–In Life Drawing

No Instructor   Thursdays 6:30 - 8:30pm

Age: Adult   Cost: $15 per session   Class Size: 4-10

Models will be scheduled for each class, and an artcenter facilitator will be responsible for guiding the poses. For the first 10 minutes, the students warm up and familiarize themselves with the models proportions by doing short, loose erasable sketches as the model changes poses every 30 seconds. Moving on to increasingly longer poses, from 10 minutes to 40 minutes, gives the student time to work up a more complete drawing. There will be no formal instruction though informal critique amongst the artists will be encouraged.

Afternoon Art

Instructor: Penny Krebiehl, Little Artshram Teachers   Mondays and Wednesdays 3:30 - 5:30pm

Age: 6 and up   Cost: $120 member, $130 non-member   Class Size 10-15

Afternoon Art program is design to engage and inspire children through two and three dimensional visual art. This six week program will present a different theme and media each week; with emphasis on drawing, cartooning, illustration and watercolor.  Supply list: 9x12 spiral bound sketch book, tracing paper, pencils (various leads: HB, 2B, 4B), kneaded eraser and Sharpee markers (fine, extra fine).

 

OUTLOUD! Girls Creative Group

We believe that art is a mighty power! And OUTLOUD! is a way to engage that artistic power through a “coming-of-age” program for girls, sharing girl-centered issues and experiences through journal, book, puppet and mask making, creative writing, drawing and painting techniques. Our first session will focus on drawing techniques and beginning watercolor. Supply list: 9x12 spiral bound sketch book, tracing paper, pencils (various leads) kneaded eraser and Sharpee markers (fine, extra fine). Please bring a “sack-supper” and beverage as well. We’ll make plans for a shared supper the following weeks. PLEASE NOTE: this program will be held at the Little Artshram Studio at 311 1/2  Maple, Traverse City

 

BIG on Abstract!  Acrylic “Wet Paint” Series III

Instructor: Carrie Murphy   Saturday, April 5, 12, 19, 20   10am - 12pm

Age: 8 - 12   Cost: $100 member, $110 non-member   Class Size: 4-7

An engaging and playful way to paint. Work on a BIG sky painting. Build a textual background and add color to bring your textural abstract to life. Create a Klimpt-like still life using shapes, metallic paint and floral symbols. Students should bring paint shirts to protect clothing. All materials provided.

 

Drawing in the Gallery

Instructor: Carrie Murphy   Monday, July 7, 14, 21, 28   6:30 – 8:30pm

Age:8-12   Cost:  $80 member, $90 non-member   Class Size: 4-7

Develop excellent drawing skills! Form, value and cast shadow will be covered. Explore a variety of subjects that you will help select. Guaranteed that you will learn something new! Watch your drawing skills grow in a short period of time! Amaze your friends! Amaze yourself! Materials list: 9”x12” spiral bound sketch book.

 

Workshops

 

Flip Books  for Children & Adults

Instructor: Pam Yee   Saturday ,May 10  

Children, ages 8 and up         9 am – 12 pm

Adults                                         1 pm – 4 pm

Cost: $45 member/ $55 non-member plus $6 material fee

Students will make flip books using card stock, decorative papers, and fibers provided by the instructor. Students may bring their favorite papers, fibers or ephemera to add to their project.

 Pam Yee is a mixed media artist who makes hand bound books, altered books, altered art and ATCs.   She served as President of ISABA (International Society of Altered Book Artists) from 2002-2007 and is a member of MIABA (MI Altered Book Artists).  She has been invited as guest artist in the Traverse City elementary, Frankfort elementary, Frankfort middle and Suttons Bay high schools   She has been published in articles around the country and her work has been included in exhibitions around the state.   She volunteers at the Benzie County Drop In Center in Benzonia with the art program.  Pam has worked with the 4H groups in Benzie County.  She has taken classes around the country learning various techniques in making, binding and altering books.  She also teaches private classes.
