Summer Workshop General Information

Most of our workshops have an artcenter representative, called a monitor. This is the “go to” person if you have any non-instructional questions or problems during the workshop. Our monitors are members of the artcenter and are area residents. This means that in addition to helping you with information regarding the workshops, they will be glad to answer questions about shopping, family activities, restaurants and offer insights to the area.

Our kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and sink so you may bring your lunch each day or plan to go out to eat. There are several places in the area that you can walk to for lunch. We do have air conditioning and for efficiency we try to maintain one constant and comfortable temperature. We suggest you bring a sweater to assure your comfort.

Oil students: Our workshops take place in a large open building with dividers. Some students may be sensitive to solvents, therefore we request that you use GAMSOL, an odorless mineral spirit. GAMSOL is available through Cheap Joe’s and most art supply stores.

Workshop Schedule follows:

  Marjorie Arnett: It’s a Beginning!
  Acrylic
May 31, June 1 (Note: two day)
 Member $200/Non-member $220

A workshop for the novice, the rookie, the beginner who believes they might like to paint but has not had the opportunity, desire, or the time until now.  This two day workshop will offer an environment where the inexperienced, "I haven't painted since elementary school but it was fun then "person can begin again.  When opportunity knocks, open the door to learning and find out if the artist within is available.  The medium of acrylic paint, a water soluble inexpensive paint, will be used to start you on your journey toward becoming a painter. Drawing skills are not necessary but risk-taking exploratory desire ... a must!   Students will be systematically processed through a series of techniques that will build confidence and lead to an understanding of the medium and materials. Her workshop will lead the true beginner through a process that will build confidence as well as explore materials and techniques for painting.

Marjorie Arnett worked as Assistant Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania until August of this year.  She recently retired and settled into her home studio in Leetsdale, Pennsylvania. to work as a full time artist.  Marjorie was selected for an artist's residency in a small village in Italy where she lived and painted for a year. Recently she exhibited her paintings and taught a workshop at the Academy of Art in Zagreb, Croatia.  Originally from Michigan, Marjorie works in the medium of acrylics, oils and water color.  She is an interdisciplinary artist who is also a published playwright and poet.

  Ron Monsma: Dramatic Pastel Painting
  Pastel

June 2 – June 6, 2008

  Member
$400/Non-member $420

This five-day workshop will be a great enhancement to your pastel painting skills. As artists, we find that regardless of the subject matter we are dealing with many of the same issues in our work- whether they are technical or aesthetic issues. With this in mind, I have divided the workshop into two areas – one dealing with plein air landscape painting and the other with still life.  This is an exciting approach which allows us not only to concentrate on two genres of painting, but to see how understanding the relationship between the two enhances our work. All instruction is geared toward each student’s individual ability and each student will find that regardless of their level of ability they can make dramatic improvement in the quality of their work.

Ron Monsma has been painting and teaching for over 30 years.  Ron is currently head of Drawing and Painting at Indiana University South Bend. In 1984 he was chosen to show at the Chicago Art Institutes prestigious 51st Drawing Competition. Since that time, Ron has had numerous solo exhibitions including galleries in Chicago, Indianapolis and Cincinnati and is represented in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe.

Pastel Journal has just announced that Ron’s painting, “Collection with Acorns” has been named the Jack Richeson/Unison Pastels Best of Show in the 9th Annual Pastel 100 Competition. Ron’s work was chosen from over 4,500 entries from around the world. An interview with Ron discussing his work can be found on the Pastel Journal website.

In 2000 a number of Ron’s works were showcased in the Chinese book Contemporary American Oil Painting. Since that time Ron’s work has appeared in a number of other publications as well including a 2001 feature article in The Pastel Journal which accompanied his receiving the Diane B. Bernhard Gold Medal Award for Excellence. In 2004 he wrote a cover article on metaphor and technique for the November issue of International Artist Magazine and that same month saw his work in The Artist’s Magazine in an article on alternative framing techniques for which one of his pastels was used as the frontispiece. In 2005 he was included in The Artist’s Magazine again in a September article on contemporary still life painting and in February 2006 The Artist’s Magazine presented a feature article on Ron’s figurative work. Also in 2006 his work appeared in Pure Color, the Best of Pastel published by Northlight Books and in the book 20th Century Indiana Landscape Painters. Ron Monsma is represented by Miller Gallery in Cincinnati Ohio, Blue Gallery in Three Oaks Michigan and Green Leaf Gallery in Bannockburn Illinois.

Ron has also worked as a successful illustrator; creating works for a number of clients including St. Mary’s College, Memorial Health Systems and Bank of America.

Mary Guntzviller

  Mary Guntzviller:
“No Fear Factor”
                                – Emerging Figure

 All Media
 June 9- June 13, 2008
 Member $395/ Non-member $415

“How do I start” or “What’s next?” are both common stumbling blocks, especially with the figure. Through example, demonstration, and dialogue, Mary shows the student how to answer these questions while maintaining the student’s individual style. Emphasis is on building confidence and objectivity so that the fear of failure is lessened in order to concentrate on creating. Mary walks the beginning student through the process of first capturing the figure from life on paper, then moving them on to the medium of their choice. For intermediate students, Mary helps them progress towards their goals whether headed for realism or abstraction.

Bring humor.
