ARTIST BIO
My work as an artist and art educator draws from the fact that I was born and raised in Traverse City. I remember, as a young child, sitting on the beach overlooking East Bay, sketching the views, and feeling the peace and splendor of my surroundings.
Art has brought me enormous joy, challenges, and fulfillment. I attended Central Michigan University and Michigan State University, graduating with a degree in Art Education. My Masters Degree in Fine Art, with an emphasis on photography, is from Central Michigan University. I have continued my graduate studies in Art through Eastern Michigan University, along with workshops through The Art Center in Traverse City and other venues throughout the United States and Europe.
My teaching career started in the early 1970’s with Traverse City Area Public Schools, along with teaching a number of classes through Northwestern Michigan College’s Extended Education program. After thirty six years with TCAPS, having taught in every Traverse City Public School at one time or another, I have recently committed to pursuing my own art practice fulltime.
Originally exhibiting with the Northwestern Michigan Artists and Craftsmen, presently called Artcenter Traverse City, both my 2D and 3D work has been shown in numerous art shows, and in private and corporate collections in Michigan, and in other states. As a Nautilus Fellow of the International Society of Experimental Artists, I have exhibited in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Florida, Texas, California, Washington, and in Cardiff, Wales.
While traveling in France and Italy in recent years I painted in ancient cities, quaint villages, gardens, vineyards and olive groves. However the surroundings we have right here in Northern Michigan, whether it’s Lake Michigan, the Sleeping Bear National Park, or Old Mission Peninsula, continually bring me inspiration and pride. Last summer I sat in places like the scenic overlook, the parking lots of wineries, and at the Old Mission Light House painting my own surroundings, ever changing. Each time was magnificent, wind blowing, people parking, water, billowing clouds, blue sky, vineyards, orchards and rolling hills everywhere.
